Dodgers Holiday
(I wrote this post awhile ago and didn’t hit publish so here it is now. Better late than never!)
October is always a fun month for baseball (especially when you team is in the playoffs), and last week was one of the most exciting weeks for baseball I think I’ve ever experienced.
It all started on Monday evening October 27th. I picked my kids up from school and declared the afternoon a “Dodgers Holiday.” What does that mean exactly? It meant they were allowed to skip their evening activity (taekwondo class) and instead they got to come home, relax, and watch Game 3 of the Dodgers vs. Blue Jays in the World Series. They also got to have their choice of what I cooked for dinner and chose chicken drumsticks and veggies. They were so pumped!
We went to Trader Joe’s to pick up what we needed for dinner along with several other snacks. My oldest had just finished a swim class and was hungry and wanted all the snacks and I let her stock up. She was so happy.
The game had just started as we were checking out. We listened to the first inning of the game on the radio during the drive home. I was explaining to my girls how to follow the game by listening to the announcer. It was fun, but even I was getting confused. We heard '‘Hernandez” hit a home run and we were so excited. The whole time we thought they were talking about Kike Hernandez. Then, when we got home we found out it was not Kike who hit the homerun, but Teoscar Hernandez. Oops!
We watched the game on TV and ate dinner. My husband was working late that night and came home during the 5th inning. Then in the 7th inning, Ohtani hit a homerun to tie the game. Then we went into extra innings!
The Dodgers were getting deep into their bullpen and we were getting nervous. Then the relief pitcher hero Will Klein came in and crushed it. We had never heard of him before and now he will go down in history. We enjoyed watching the guys get fruit in the dugout during the later innings as well and we followed suit at home and snacked on some apples at 11pm.
My kids stayed up for the entire game. My oldest fell asleep five minutes before the game ended at nearly midnight in the 18th inning with a walk off home run by Freddie Freeman. My youngest stayed up for the whole game.
Yes, the girls went to school late the next morning but it was totally worth it for these core memories. I know I will always remember it and hope they do, too.
